If you have spent any time researching hair system glue, you will have noticed the issue straight away. Dozens of bottles. Many claiming to be the strongest, longest lasting, most invisible bond available. That does not help much when you are trying to choose what actually suits your scalp, your routine, and how you want your hairline to look.
The question I get asked more than any other is simple. Which Ghostbond should I buy?
XL, Platinum, and Supreme are the three main adhesives in the range. Each exists for a specific reason. Once you understand what each one is built to handle, choosing the best hair system adhesive for your situation becomes far more straightforward.
I am Matthew McIlveen, Education & Product Specialist at Scruffy Hair Co. Over the last 15 years, I have worked with daily wearers across the UK to find adhesives that genuinely suit how they live. Here is how the three compare.
Why There Are Three Flagship Adhesives
A common assumption is that more expensive means stronger, and stronger means better. With Ghostbond, that is not really the case.
Each formula is built for a different situation. One covers everyday wear. One deals with oil and sweat. One focuses on appearance under strong lighting.
All three are water based acrylic adhesives. They are skin safe and free from harsher solvents found in lower quality wig glue, such as Hexane, Xylene, and Toluene, which can upset the scalp over time.
Where they differ is in melting point, moisture resistance, pigment, and the type of hold they are set up to deliver.
Ghost Bond XL: The Reliable All Rounder
Ghost Bond XL is the one I recommend most often. It handles day to day wear with very few issues.
It is designed for a 2 to 3 week hold under normal conditions. It dries clear, sits clean at the hairline, and deals well with everyday life. That includes showering, light to moderate exercise, and typical UK weather.
What sets XL apart is how stable it remains. It has better moisture control and a higher melting point than many standard water based adhesives. That means it is far less likely to soften when your body heats up or the weather shifts.
If you have ever had a bond turn tacky halfway through the day, you will understand why that matters.
XL works best for:
- Daily wearers with normal to slightly oily scalps
- Anyone wanting a consistent 2 to 3 week hold
- Wearers in typical UK conditions
- Lace systems where a clean hairline matters
- Anyone new to hair systems
If you are unsure where to start, this is usually it.
Ghost Bond Platinum: For Oil, Sweat, and Demanding Conditions
Ghost Bond Platinum is what I suggest when XL is not quite holding up.
It is built for oily scalps, heavier sweating, and humid environments. These are the main reasons bonds tend to fail early.
If your hairline starts lifting within a week, or your adhesive turns white when you sweat, Platinum is often the fix.
The difference comes down to how it handles oil and heat. It resists oil coming through the skin and holds its structure better when temperatures rise.
In real terms, I often see clients move from 5 to 7 day holds with XL to around 2 weeks with Platinum once they switch. Not because it is stronger in a simple sense, but because it suits their scalp better.
Platinum is right if you:
- Have moderately to very oily skin
- Sweat heavily through sport or work
- Spend time in humid conditions
- Train regularly
- Have tried XL and found it breaks down early
It still relies on proper scalp prep. Skip that, and even the best adhesive will struggle.
Ghost Bond Supreme: For Lighting, Cameras, and Detail
Ghost Bond Supreme is less widely known, but for some wearers it is the only option that makes sense.
It is based on the same core formula as XL, but with a key difference. It includes a pigment that blends with the skin.
This reduces shine and stops the white flash effect that can show up under bright lights or on camera.
It was originally made for stage use. It is now widely used by people who spend time on video calls, in studios, or under direct lighting.
If you have ever seen a hairline look slightly off in photos, that subtle reflection is usually the reason. Supreme is built to deal with that.
Supreme is right for:
- Performers and presenters
- Content creators
- Client facing roles with video calls
- Anyone noticing shine at the hairline
- Wearers focused on visual detail
Hold time is similar to XL. Around 2 to 3 weeks under normal conditions. You are not sacrificing durability. You are improving how the hairline reads.
How to Choose Between Them
At a glance, here is how the three ghost bond adhesive options compare:
| Adhesive | Best for | Hold | Stand-out feature |
| Ghost Bond XL | Everyday wear, balanced scalps, typical UK conditions | 2–3 weeks | Reliable, forgiving, invisible at the hairline |
| Ghost Bond Platinum | Oily skin, heavy sweat, humid climates, active routines | 2 weeks+ on oily skin | Highest moisture and oil resistance in the range |
| Ghost Bond Supreme | On-camera work, stage lighting, video calls | 2–3 weeks | Skin-blending pigment for an invisible hairline under light |
If XL is working, there is no real need to change. If your hold is breaking down early, Platinum usually solves it. If your hairline is catching light in a way you dislike, Supreme is the answer.
A Note on Authentic Ghostbond
Counterfeit products are still a real issue, especially on large marketplaces.
Pro Hair Labs has flagged fake bottles containing unsuitable chemicals, including preservatives that can irritate the skin or worse.
A few quick checks:
- Genuine bottles are rarely below £15
- Labels are clean, with correct spelling and clear batch details
- The adhesive should be smooth, not separated or overly strong smelling
If you have had irritation that does not make sense, it is worth questioning the source. The same applies to removal and aftercare products – using counterfeit removers alongside genuine adhesive can cause similar issues.
At Scruffy Hair Co, we only stock verified products, so you know what you are getting.
Choosing the Right Ghostbond for You
This is not about picking the best product overall. It is about choosing what fits your scalp and routine.
For most people, XL works well. For oil and sweat, Platinum tends to hold better. For lighting and close up visibility, Supreme stands out.
If you are unsure, speak to us. It is far easier to get this right at the start than to cycle through options.
Get the formula right, and everything else becomes easier.
Important: Always patch test any new hair system adhesive before full use. Apply a small amount to a discreet area and wait 24 hours. If irritation occurs, stop use and seek medical advice. Hold times will vary based on skin type, climate, and routine.
